The BIS debt securities data sets cover financing activity in debt capital markets. They capture debt instruments designed to be traded in financial markets and distinguish between those issued in domestic and international markets. The debt securities statistics are collected by the BIS from national authorities. The international debt securities are compiled by the BIS using security-level data from commercial vendors.

Global liquidity indicators

The BIS uses the term “global liquidity” to refer to the ease of financing in global financial markets. The BIS global liquidity indicators (GLIs) track credit to non-bank borrowers, covering both loans extended by banks and funding from global bond markets through the issuance of international debt securities (IDS). The main focus is on foreign currency credit denominated in three major reserve currencies (US dollars, euros and Japanese yen) to non-residents, ie borrowers outside the respective currency areas.

The BIS derivatives statistics cover derivatives traded on organised exchanges, outstanding positions in over-the-counter (OTC) derivatives markets, and turnover in foreign exchange and OTC interest rate derivatives markets. The consumer price index statistics track the average change in the price of goods and services purchased by households. This data set covers several decades.

The exchange rate statistics track the value of a currency against one or more other currencies. The bilateral exchange rates data set contains exchange rates against the US dollar. They are the main input to calculate the effective exchange rates, which track the value of a currency against a basket of other currencies.
